5 ton Steam Wagon.
STAND No. 42.
THE Mann wagon is distinctive on account of the arrangement of
side-firing for the boiler. The stoker sits in a comfortable position on the right-hand side of the vehicle, having a good view of the road, and can replenish and take care of his fire with a minimum of inconvenience. The model on the stand is a tipping.wagon, and embodies a. new type of tipping gear. It may be operate& either by hand or by gearing from the engine. The preliminary drive from the latter is by means of a roller chain, and this portion of the gearing may be. thrown either in or out of operation by means of a simple clutch. The main driving shaft is a; horizontal transverse one just behind the cab. It carries a worm which engages with a worm wheel at the front end of the longitudinal shaft running down. the middle of the chassis. This shaft is comparatively short, and carries at its rear end a pinion, engaging with a curved rack, the teeth of which are steel pins mounted between a. pair of curved rails. The sketch which is reproduced elsewhere will serve better than a written description to indicate the arrangement of this portion of the mechanism. For the rest, characteristic steam wagon lines are 'followed. The engine is a compound,, the working pressure being 200 lb. per sq. in. The final drive is by a single roller chain, and there are two sets of brakes fitted, one operating on the drum of the differential gear and the other on drums in the rear wheels; both brakes are very powerful. e
