Rubber-tyred Steam Wagons., Steam Tractor.

STAND No. 45.

THE outstanding feature of the Foden stand is undoubtedly the New Foden tractor. This was shown at the Royal Agricultural Society's exhibition this year at Derby, but will nevertheless be a novelty to most of the visitors to Olympia. This machine has a haulage capacity of from eight to ten tons, and Is made, on broad lines, to the same design as the well known Foden steam wagon itself. It has overtype engine, locomotive boiler, short wheelbase, with large rubber-tyred wheels and a tank over the rear axle which can be loaded with water or other ballast. so as to increase the,aslhasiye_eapacity of the rear;

wheels. The compound engine utilizes steam with a working pressure of 200 lb. per sq. in., and drives through the familiar change-speed gear and single

roller chain to the usual type of rear axle. A winding drum is carried on the latter, with a length ofr steel cable. Visitors should, not overlook the substantial, nature of the construction of this tractor, particularly at the rear, where the trailer will be attached. There is a double set. of brakes, both operating on drums in rear wheel; one is operated by pedal, the other by screw gear operating first through worm and wheel, and then by a set of lever connections.

Foden wagons have not undergone any considerable alteration since they last had reference in these columns. Miller improvements have taken place here and there, and perhaps a novel feature is the truss which is now fitted to each side of the main frame. This consists of a substantial bracket secured to the inside of the main frame member immediately behind the cab. This truss is about 15 ins. long, and is tied to the frame fore and aft by a single flat steel_ bar. The caststeel wheels are shod with rubber tyrea, and the brakes are the contracting-band type.
