New 5 ton Chassis. 50-seater
Coach.
STAND No. 78.
THE Commer Car exhibit consists of four vehicles—at char-a-bancs, tip-wagon, and two chassis. The char-a banes is a 28-seater, with a door to each seat accommodating five people, but with no off-side door, except that giving access to the driver's seat. The standard Commer char-it-banes has flat wings and solid-tyred wheels, but the one on view has domed wings, Michelin disc wheels, and 955 mm. by 155 mm. Michelin cord tyres. In this case the chassis is the, Commercial Cars, Ltd., 3.P. type. Prominent in the front of the stand is the new C.C. 5 ton net load chassis, which is quite new, with the exception
of the engine, this latter being the 40 h.p. unit previously used in the P.C. chassis. The frame of he new vehicle is of pressed steel stiffened by tie-rods running frOm end to end, these tie-rods running through king posts, those to rearwind being extensions of the forward spring-hanger bracket to the rear springs. The gearbox gives four forward speeds and is of the well-known Thomas design, which provides very shortand stiff shafts. The foot brake is double-cam
operated and is extremely powerful, being capable always of locking the back wheels. Chain drive is retained because of the advantages to the class of work for which this type of vehicle is used. The C.C. chassis is always tested by the makers with a 2 ton overload-7 to in all—over a special test course, which includes a, gradient of 1 in 7. The brakes on -the vehicles are of ample dimensions, being internal-expanding brake's en the back wheels and entirely. enclosed.
The other chassis shown_is the 2 G. for 2 ton loads, having a 25 h.p. engine, a three-speed Thomas gearbox wormdriven rear axle, and powerful brakes..
The standard R.C. chassis is shown with a triebody operated by a Bromilow and Edwards twin-hydraulic ram tipping gear, the twin rams working in a toggle bar set acreas the frame.
There are some extremely interesting models of bodies displayed on this• stand, including a tilt-van on a canvas frame, a closed-body tilt-van, a brewers' body, and a box van.
