rrHE Atkinson wagon is fitted with :1 the latest type of Uniflow engine. This is a power unit which has proved itself to be particularly • economical of steam and; therefore, of coal. interesting feature is the arrangement of a valve in the piston by which the dan ger of excessive pressure at the end of the stroke is eliminated, while clearance is still reduced to a minimum.

Apart from this substantial feature, the wagon is more or less the standard undertype machine the direct drive from engine to rear a...-de being by means of a single roller chain. Two sets of brakes are fitted, one on the differentia gear, the other on drums in the rear wheels. An interesting detail is the drive from the engine to the mechanical oil pump. A crossbar is bolted to the flywheel, and to this a pin is secured, from which a coupling rod runs to the ram of tho• pump. Provision for adjustment is made by drilling a number of holes in the crossbar, into any one of which the driving pin can be fitted.
