"IT is quite clear that the public have not

been asked in this case", said the chairman of the Northern area Traffic Commissioners, Mr J. T. Hanlon, sitting at Durham on Tuesday when United Automobile Services and several local authorities clashed over an application to run a bus service through a developing area of Teeside.

United asked for approval for a service from Eston to Stockton via Ormesby, Normanby and Thornaby. The application was opposed by the corporation transport undertakings of Middlesbrough and Stockton and by Thornaby Corporation, Eston urban council and Teeside RaiHess Traction Board. Middlesbrough Corporation applied to run an identical service. This was opposed by United.

Mr J. L. R. Croft, for United, said there was a need for a through service to link up the towns.

After a submission on behalf of the objection authorities Mr. Hanlon said that the public need hail not been established.

The application was adjourned sine die to give both sides an opportunity of producing more evidence.
