THE effect of the new Road Safety Bill on the
drive to eliminate excessive diesel smoke was outlined in the Commons by Mr. Stephen Svringler, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport.
He said that proposals in the Bill would enable the Minister to make plating, type approval and maintenance regulations, which should reduce the emission of excessive smoke from diesel-engined vehicles.
For these moves would prevent overloading, require that new vehicles had engines which conformed to the new British Standard for diesel engines, and include a smoke check in the annual test for goods vehicles.
