COUNCILLOR JOHN WHITEHEAD, J.P., deputy chairman of Bury Transport Committte, has been appointed Mayor of Bury for 1939-1940, an office which he also held in 1936-1927.
MR. ARTHUR R. JONES; insurance broker to the C.M.U.A. and a member of Leeds City Council, has been appointed honorary entertainments organizer for troops in the Northern Command.
COUNCILLOR GEORGE F. Box, managing director of George Box, Ltd., a big Yorkshire concern of motor engineers and traders, has been elected Mayor of Batley.
COUNCILLOR PEET has been elected a member of Southport Transport Committee in place of COUNCILLOR W. TATTERSALL. The chairman is COUNCILLOR MACKLEY and the vicechairman COUNCILLOR BANNER.
ALDERMAN J. M. GRIFFITH has been re-elected chairman of the Liverpool Passenger Transport Committee. He was first elected to this post in March, 1932, and has held the chairmanship
ever since. This year he has been elected chairman of the Lancashire and Cheshire Municipal Passenger Transport Authorities Council.
MR. A. IlefuaarNs, C.M.G., C.B.E., Deputy Comptroller-General of the Department of Overseas Trade, who, since the outbreak of hostilities has held the appointment of Principal Officer to the Midland Region (Civil Defence), has now been recalled and appointed Acting Comptroller-General of the Department of Overseas Trade.
MR. A. B. B. VALENTINE has been appointed Commercial Officer of the London Passenger Transport Board. His chief responsibilities are the establishment of all fares, rates and charges; the negotiation of matters relating to fares with other undertakings; all special arrangements for the carriage of passengers, including concessional facilities of every kind; the private hire of road vehicles, and road excursions and tours; the forms and systems of tickets and railway-ticket supplies; the lost property and public inquiry organizations. Mr. A. B. B. Valentine joined the Underground 'groupof companies in 1928.
