Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Rig Durham Road-works Scheme.

A colossal programme of suggested road works, including new roads and improvements which have been under consideration for several years, and are estimated to cost over £8,500,000, has been prepared by Mr. W. J. Merrett, Durham county surveyor.

In a subsequent report on traffic statistics, Mr. Merrett expresses the view that the increasing number of light motorcars is tending to overcrowd the roads. A recent census on the Great North Road showed that, of 5,292 vehicles, 2,399 were cars. Twenty years ago the number of vehicles passing the same point was 699, including one bus, against 653 this year—a striking in n=

crease—and 105 motorcars, contrasted with 2,399 this year. The average daily traffic is now 12,864 tons, or 81 tons less than last year.

It -was made clear at the meeting of the council which considered the report, that much was "merely suggestion."

Municipal Milk-transport Service. .

The municipal authorities of Rome have recently organized a special under-, taking for the wholesale collection and distribution of the milk in the Italian capital, for which purpose 40 Fiat lorries with open sides and covered tops have been acquired. Special partitions allow the carrying of large milk cans without rattle.

Maidenhead Traffic Diversion.

Maidenhead Town Council has suggested that steps should be taken to divert traffic passing through the town, with a view to relieving the present congestion in High Street. The chief constable considers that it would be well to try the experiment, for a few months, of diverting west-bound traffic passing over Maidenhead bridge through certain by-roads, re-entering the Bath Road at the top of Castle Hill.

The highways committee of Berks County Council recommends that no objection be raised to such an experiment being carried out, on the understanding that the county council accepts no liability for road damage.
