Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

as a design controller was recently put forward by Mr. W. Vane Moriand, the Walsall transport manager. There is certainly much sound sense in the argument that there should be one code of requirements for passenger vehicles, laid down on a national basis. The officers would still act as public servants in that way, but not as local arbiters of design.

A HAPPY beginning was made at the Scottish Motor Show by Bean Cars, Ltd., as on the first day this company sold a fleet of goods vehicles which

brought in sufficient profit to pay the whole of its show expenses. Incidentally, the new models created a lot of interest and are remarkable value-for-money propositions.

A WELL-KNOWN maker tells us that his latest

type of petrol engine is so designed that merely by the substitution of the cylinder heads and the addition of the necessary pump it can be converted into an oil engine. It would be almost useless to make a conversion of any engine with bearings not designed for the extra stresses imposed by the higher compression and explosion pressures. AN Institution of AutomobR Engineers' data sheet introduces an interesting new unit of power, called a torev. It represents the power transmitted by a torque of 1 lb.-ft. at one revolution per minute. This unit has been introduced to avoid obscuring the relation between torque and speed. A torev equals 2 ir ft-lb. per minute, or .00019 h.p., whilst 1 11.p. equals approximately 5,252 torevs. One watt equals 7.04035 torevs and one kilowatt equals approximately 7,040 torevs.

WE were very glad to see that Mr. L. H. Pomeroy, managing director of the Dainiler Co., Ltd., is much improved in health and recovering from his recent attack of phlebitis, . which, he told us, although it kept him in bed, could not keep his mind from actively engaging in new ideas, the results of which will soon be apparent. PNEUMATIC tyres of 13i-in. section and Goodyear make are now being used on the large Scammell four-wheeler. The War-Department is now inquiring for tyres of 15-in. section, and these are in course of manufacture. It is interesting to note that the weight of one 13i-in. tyre is in the neighbourhood of 2 cwt.

OBSERVATiONS at the Scottish Motor Show indicate that combining the displays of private and commercial vehicles is advantageous to both. We noted with interest that there were as many visitors to the commercial side as were to be seen amongst the private-car exhibits.

There are signs that there is a fresh public in such exhibitions—those people who are anxious to see the public-service vehicle in which they will eventually ride.
