• Swiss pressure groups aim to ban long-distance lorry traffic from the country.
Environmentalists and politicians say trans-European lorries are damaging the country's tourist attractions and propose that lorries should be loaded on railways for cross-Alpine trips.
Under the cotmtry's constitution, a national referendum on the issue will be organised if the plan attracts more than 100,000 supporters within 18 months. Over five million trucks are crossing the Alps every year — four times the 1980 figure.
