about the punctuality of local services operated by National Welsh Omnibus have led to the company's appearance before the South Wales Deputy Traffic Commissioner Gerrard Sullivan. The Commissioner is considering whether to impose a condition prohibiting National Welsh from operating some or any local services, and whether to order the company to repay 20% of the fuel duty rebate it has received over the past three months.
Ten members of the public gave evidence of alleged nonoperation and early and late running of journeys. It was claimed that services taken over from the now defunct Inter Valley Link had deteriorated since the takeover.
For National Welsh, Geoffrey Williams said it was conceded that there had been occasions when journeys had run late or had failed to operate due to vehicle breakdowns and staffing difficulties. However, many of the allegations were denied. The company's lost mileage record was splendid compared to other operators.
The hearing was adjourned until 18 May when evidence regarding monitoring exercises carried out on the company's services will be heard.
