ORIGINAL TEST REPORT PLUS POINTS. Good acceleration/attractive price and kerb weight/good average speeds/excellent heating and ventilation/good headlights/good torque/ flexible engines/low noise/good stowage/light clutch and steering.

ORIGINAL TEST REPORT MINUS POINTS: gearbox 'ponderous'/steering lacked 'feel/brakes disappointing/cab prone to rust on doors/'would throw horns away'. OPERATOR REPORT Operator 1 is engaged on express distribution and high street deliveries nationwide. A large operation, it has over 300 mixed vehicles with a majority of Scanias.

Operator 2 is engaged on general haulage nationwide with flats and tilts. The fleet size is 12 and comprises of Scanias and Volvos. Operator 3 is a two vehicle operator with both of the above vehicle. His work is mainly European general haulage.

Operator 1 described the vehicles as 'excellent' and had average fuel returns of 7 mpg with the fuel consumption depending on the driver. The main attraction of Scanias was the excellent resale value and driver acceptance. Though agreeing with the majority of the plus and minus points, he added alternator, urs, ignition switches and gearbox problems to the list of debit points.

Operator 2 didn't agree with the majority of the minus points but admitted heavy brake lining wear. One of his vehicles had a cylinder head gasket blow in the first 6 weeks and a diff lock jammed shortly afterwards. The levels of reliability and dealer service were about equal between the Scanias and the Volvo although there was a noticeable higher resale value for the Scanias. Average fuel consumption was given as 'about 7 mpg' but was not closely monitored.

Operator 3 described both vehicles as 'the best thing since sliced bread' and, although liking the increase in power, felt that the lower powered vehicle had perfectly acceptable performance. On normal runs, both vehicles were returning an average of 7.5 mpg and this was put down to careful and considerate driving styles. All three operators thought that the standard Scania horn was inadequate and brake performance disappointing. Dealer service was rated as good but the price of replacement and service items was thought to he high.
