Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Firstly taking the road test minus points in order: Gearbox ponderous. Since the vehicles were tested the gearbox has been replaced by a new model, the GR871, introduced in 1986. This has many improvements, which has resulted in a better "feel". During 1983, however, a change in production methods was introduced to strengthen the gears.

Steering lacked "feel": With the introduction of the 3 Series, both a new steering box and kingpin arrangement have done much for the feel of the steering. However, "feel", is a subjective comment and adjustments can be made on 2 Series models to suit different drivers.

Brakes disappointing: In October '86, Scania introduced a completely new low hysterisis braking system, which has not only improved the braking efficiency but given the pedal more positive action.

Cab prone to rust on doors: En August '83, the cab anti-corrosion programme was extended to include all main panels. Since then, Scania has offered a five year cab corrosion warranty under its Lifeline scheme.

To answer the operator comments directly. Alternator: Several changes have taken place to the alternators fitted to this model since '83. The output was raised from 35A to 55A, and changes have been made to the stator and wiring. UJs: In mid '88, a new P40 shaft used with redesigned Ills, incorporating lahyrynth seals, which have proved superior to earlier models. Ignition switches: In April '86, new shrouding was introduced to prevent dirt ingress. Heavy brake lining wear: The usual cause of excessive wear on tractors is the incompatibility between the trailer and tractor brakes. This is often caused by maladjustment of the trailer brakes, leading to the unit doing most of the braking. Blown cylinder head gasket: This is not a common problem, and we think that the case in question is isolated.

Price of service and replacement items: Since 1983, a large number of service exchange items have become available which mean that service and replacement costs have been reduced.

This points should clarify the improvements made on Scania models that were tested six years ago. However, the 2 Series is no longer in production, and the latest 3 Series have a vast number of improvements over the previous model.
