/The concept Lynx citybus underframe with a Volvo THD 102KF engine, ZF four-speed automatic gearbox and lefthand drive was on display at the Barcelona Motor Show this week (see page 14), spearheading Leyland Bus's campaign to re-establish itself as a major player in Europe with the backing of Volvo.
Since it debuted at the RAI in Amsterdam last year the exhibit has been creating "very positive feedback", says marketing support manager John Broadley.
It will now be bodied by Camo of Portugal and brought back to the UK for testing. Another concept vehicle will be built for the Frankfurt and Kortrijk, Belgium, shows.
The underframe will not be marketed in the UK, where Leyland is sticking to its integral-bodied, Cumminspowered Lynx.
"We have not bodied the concept vehicle because bodying requirements in different European countries are very specific," says Broadley.
"A Volvo engine has been chosen because we will be using Volvo's network on the Continent and need commonality of parts," he adds.
O Barcelona was also chosen for the debut of the new Iveco TurboDally, with a more powerful Sofim engine, improved aerodynamics and cab comfort, and reduced interior noise levels.
Over 11,000 Dailies and TurboDaifies have been sold since their launch in 1981 — many of them in chassiscab and chassis-cowl form.
