More than 70% of the country's mail is transported by British Rail in a 2200 million deal which still has four years to run.
The Post Office says: "The Royal Mail, as part of a continuing drive to ensure the best possible service to customers, is reviewing nationwide operations which move a record 54 million letters a day.
"Like any other large business, we are continuing to look at the different options to see how to improve transport operations to benefit our customers. We have not yet reached a decision as the study is still in its early stages, and talks with unions are only about different concepts."
The Post Office is looking at its transport operations as part of a new programme it has set up to monitor the quality of its service and distribution. The study will particularly target London and the South of England which, "has not always given a high level of service due to staff shortages," the Post Office admits.
It has also launched a 2620
million investment programme to improve its letter service. Last year over 12% of first class letters arrived late. o Rai'freight Distribution plans to triple its traffic to more than six million tonnes a year once the Channel Tunnel is operational, and has the potential to transport more than 15 million tonnes, says Railfreight Distribution chief Ian Brown.
