Denis Morgan (Snr). complete with a Bedford QL army surplus truck that had been converted into a tipper that could load sand out of a quarry, started the company in 1950. The business gradually expanded before the emergence of hydraulics changed everything.

"In the 1950s, plant used rope. In the 1960s, when hydraulics came in, there was a new breed of equipment. size improved and the business grew," says Denis Morgan (Jnr). "In the 1950s, it was four-wheelers, army surplus: in the 1960s, it was sixand eight-wheelers; and by the late 1970s and early 1980s, we were changing our fleet to eight-wheelers.

"We were looking for economies of scale, more tonnes per cost of driver per cost of vehicle. We got to a big-scale set-up, peaking in the early 2000s," he says.

Denis (Snr) passed away in 1978, but his wife, Ursula, is still involved with the company today, as are daughters, Karin and Barbara. Denis's third daughter, Lorraine, is married to director John Dennan. Fellow director Jack Rowley is responsible for the civil engineering division of the business.

The company has 13 quarries, a workshop at Hooton and a head office at Great Sutton. The operation covers the West Midlands, the North-West and North-East of England.
