Brooke Williams says his key to success over the past 18 years has been taking on all the lobs the big boys don't want. His company, based just off the A34 at Chilton, Oxfordshire, specialises in the delivery and installation of machinery such as industrial laundry equipment, commercial refrigeration and vending machines. From a single van the fleet has grown to eight 7.5 and 12-tonners.

We used to run an all-Mercedes fleet but we had concerns with the amount of often unfounded downtime that the Atego's electronics caused us,he says. If the computer said there was a fault then it was usually with the computer. We initially looked at Daf as an alternative but felt that its 12-tonner with 17.5in wheels was really an uprated 7.5-tonner. The Volvo FL is a bit heavier but it's a proper 12-tonner. Our feeling is that we can do a smaller job with the 12-tonner but we can't do a bigger job with a 7.5-tanner.

"Payload is not an issue for us at 12 tonnes. We can accommodate a 1.5-tonne cantilever tail-lift and st II carry five tonnes. That's almost twice as much as for a 7.5-tonner, and as we specify the long sleeper cab with a 22ft box body instead of an 1811 one we benef it from the extra volume. Over the year we cover about 100,000km on the UK mainland. Most of the time we run below the maximum weight and with 180hp we return around 13.5mpg overall. That's similar to the fuel consumption we got with the 11-tonne Atego.
