Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Employers must: • Issue each driver with sufficient suitable tachograph charts for every journey, with spares;

NI Ensure drivers understand the tachograph requirements and use the equipment to provide accurate records; • Organise their working practices so the drivers can comply with the drivers' hours and tachograph rules;

• Make periodic checks of tachograph charts to ensure the regulations have been complied with and, if breaches are found, take steps to avoid their repetition; • Ensure drivers return charts within 21 days of use, and retain charts for at least a year after their use; • Ensure tachographs are Inspected every two years and recalibrated every six; • Get damaged or faulty tachographs repaired by an approved source as soon as possible. Drivers must: • Carry charts for the current week and the last day of the previous week in which they have driven;

III Enter their surname and first name; the date(s) and place(s) where use of chart begins and ends; the registration of the vehicle(s); their odometer readings at start and end; and the time of any change of vehicle;

• Keep full manual records if the tachograph is damaged or faulty; • Get faulty equipment repaired en route if the vehicle can't return to its base within a week of the discovery of a failure.

• For more information on drivers' hours and tachograph legislation, see the CM/Lucas Kienzle (now VDO Kienzle) wallchart published with CM 28 May-3 June 1998.

• Professional tachograph analysis is likely to cost between 12p and 40p per chart, depending on the number of charts and the detail required.
