• Diesel duty (pence per litre) UK, 50; Italy, 26; France, 24; Austria, 20; Luxembourg, 17.

• VED (38-tonner) UK, £3,210; Austria, 82,123; Italy, £634; France, 8486; Luxembourg, 8358.

• Vehicles Truck prices can be substantially cheaper from dealers on the Continent. Tractor prices in Luxembourg, for example, can be as much as 15% below those in UK. Similar repair and maintenance contracts are available; see Fleet Focus (CM18-24 Feb).

• Operator's Licences

Foreign-registered vehicles are not subject to the UK 0-licensing system: operators need to apply for a licence in the country in which the vehicles are registered. However, the Vehicle Inspectorate is still empowered to give such vehicles inspections and prohibitions at the roadside. Operator's Licences are known by different names in different countries. In Ireland, for example, they're called Road Fund Carriers' Licences.
