• A crackdown on drivers' eyesight in the West Midlands last week is believed to be the first roadside eye test in England and Wales.
Drivers who failed to pull up accurately on a white line when flagged down by police were subjected to a full eye test.
The move could lead to further eye tests across the country although it is unclear if the police will take legal action against those who fail the test.
Of the 20 drivers pulled over in last week's check on the M6 near Perry Bar, one driver failed the test and was warned to make sure he used his glasses. A bleary-eyed French driver was fined £380 by Birmingham magistrates for taking insufficient rest.
