AT 2am on Sunday British summertime will put clocks forward one hour in the first phase of what threatens to become a chaotic four-week period 13.! European time changes.

On April 3 the Netherlands will join France, Belgium and Luxembourg in putting the clock forward thus ending a mere fortnight of "parity' with the time in Britain.

To complicate the issue — of vital importance to operators having to watch ferry departures and customs post hours — Italy has chosen Friday, April 22, for the start — for the eleventh year — of a time change which will put the country two hours ahead of GMT.

Timetable anomalies for road services working cross-frontier routes are believed to be one reason for the introduction of "daylight saving" in Germany next year. Uniform introduction dates and duration of "summer time" still seems a long way off — perhaps because of the marked absence of pressure from commercial interests.
