PEACE MOVES

MOVES aimed at settling the three-week-old dispute at the strike-bound Seddon Atkinson plants at Preston and Oldham, where production is at a standstill, were afoot this week.

At Oldham, where 760 men walked out over a claim for a bonus scheme which the management say would have infringed the pay code, shop stewards have been approaching union officers with a view to arranging meetings with the company.

A company spokesman told CM that the unions have been told that the company is willing to meet the men at Oldham to get negotiations going again.

At Preston, where the dispute is over sick pay and layoff schemes, the men were due to meet company representatives, this week in an effort to find a peace formula.
