INCREASED productivity from fewer vehicles would be the effect of increasing the maximum vehicle weight to 40 tonnes, says Freight Transport Association deputy director general Cary Turvey.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of the South Wales Division on Wednesday he accused environmentalists, the Press and MPs of "scaremongering" --heavier lorries would not mean bigger vehicles, more damage to roads, smoke and vibration.

He accused the Civic Trust of basing their "socalled proof" of increased road damage on selected statistics.
