MRS. BARBARA CASTLE has appointed a special committee of the National Road Safety Advisory Council to consider the significance of motor insurance as a factor in road safety.

She told MPs last week that compulsory passenger insurance was one of the first matters she hoped the committee would consider. J. C. Clymo has been appointed traffic manager of Southdown Motor Services Ltd. in succession to G. Duckworth, who is to become general manager of the company on May I. Mr. Clymo has had appointments with various bus companies and has been traffic manager of the Trent Motor Traction Co. Ltd. since November, 1964.

D. Glen has been appointed transport manager of the 1,700-vehicle fleet of The Marley Tile Co. Ltd. He was previously group transport manager for the Buxted Chicken Co. Ltd. and before that regional transport manager for T. Wall and Sons (Ice Cream) Ltd.

D. W. Cherry has been appointed chief engineer of Western Welsh Omnibus Co. Ltd. in succession to P. C. Ltd. since July, 1958, was previously with North Western Road Car Co. Ltd. as assistant engineer.

The bulk liquids group of the RHA has elected W. McMillan as its chairman for the ensuing year, with H. H. Clarke and J. W. Finnis as vice-chairmen. The meat and allied trades transport group has re-elected L. R. Robson as chairman and R. V. Henning as vice-chairman.

Michael Todd has joined the Rank Organization as vehicle fleet engineer. Mr. Todd, 33, has for the past three years been assistant road transport engineer with the Ross Group at Grimsby.

W. G. (Bert) Payne has been appointed group transport manager of Bowyers (Wiltshire) Ltd., and has joined the sausage and meat pie group at the company's Trowbridge headquarters. Mr. Payne was previously area manager for d leading food distributive company W. H. Stuart has been appointed sales manager of the automotive division of Hallam, Sleigh and Cheston Ltd. He has been with the company for 28 years and was previously sales technical representative.

W. L. F. Henderson, at present chief engineer of Wilts and Dorset Motor Services Ltd., has been appointed additionally chief engineer of Hants and Dorset Motor Services Ltd. (from April 1) in succession to G. R. E. Wallis, who is to take up an appointment in Trinidad. A. R. Smith, at present assistant engineer of Hants and Dorset. will become deputy chief engineer of both companies. Recent appointments to senior executive posts in the commercial vehicle divisions have been made by the Ford Motor Co. Ltd. K. Pendergast becomes manager, domestic and overseas service; A. Platt, manager, export sales; and P. B. Neal, manager, domestic field operations.

C. C. Downham has been appointed manager of Roadferry Scandinavian Services. He will be responsible for traffic to and from Scandinavia and will also control shipments from Hull to Rotterdam. Mr. Downham has been associated with the Continental Ferry Service since its inception in 1957.

The Chiltern area of the TRTA has elected W. Coulter as chairman for the ensuing year, with A. L. Lambert, E. G. Burman, G. E. Collins and T. Ascot as vice-chairmen.

J. Roberts has been appointed group transport manager of Nitrovit Ltd., of Thirsk, Yorks.

At recent elections of the Southampton area of the London and Home Counties division of the TRTA, R. Cull was elected chairman and F. W. Mitchell vice-chairman. In the Bournemouth, Poole and district area, R. A. Wood was elected chairman and R. M. Clayden vice-chairman and secretary.

At the a.g.m. of the long-distance group of the RHA last week, J. E. Kirby was re-elected chairman, with T. J. E. Price and R. W. Tree vice-chairmen. The car transporters' group re-elected R. H. Barnett as chairman, with G. H. Coiling and J. F. Eastwood vice-chairmen.

Ralph Murfitt, chairman and managing director of Murfitt Bulk Transporters Ltd., Wisbech, is on a month's business tour of Canada and the USA. He will visit 10 Canadian and American cities to discuss North American interest in his patented moving bulkhead system of vehicle discharge.

OBITUARY

WE regret to record the deaths of Arthur Bibby and V. W. Pilkington.

Mr. Bibby, almost 62, was joint general manager and director of Thos. Allen Ltd.. London, and had been with the company for more than 40 years. He was a member and one-time chairman of the bulk liquids group of the RHA.

Mr. Pilkington, who died on March 10, was technical director of Leyland Motors Ltd. on his retirement in 1964 after 38 years' service with the company. He entered the research and development division in 1923, became assistant chief engineer in 1927 and five years later was made manager of the engineering department. He held this post until promoted to chief engineer in 1936. After becoming technical director in 1956 he contributed particularly to studies of the design requirements of commercial vehicles to be used on motorways.
