■ THE setting up of "transport co-ordination councils" all over the country was suggested last week by Mr. Stephen Swingler, parliamentary secretary to the Ministry of Transport.
He told MPs that if everyone connected with transport were to put their heads together and come forward with suggestions on how to improve bus services, only in this way could adequate public transport be maintained in our Cities in the future.
Mr. Swingler invited private bus operators, especially those in the peripheral areas of London, to apply for permission to run services in London. They would, he said, receive reasonable consideration.
Mr. Swingler noted the possibility that the two aims facing transport in London—providing an adequate public service and at the same time paying its way—might be irreconcilable. If this happened, he said, the Government was quite firm—the aim must be to provide an adequate system.
