riEVELOPMENT of a whole new industrial "." complex could result from the Port of London Authority's plan, revealed this week, to build a £2.8m. grain terminal, with 180 ft. discharging towers, upstream of Tilbury Docks. Using a peak unloading rate of 1,000 tons/hr. a 35,000-ton bulk carrier could be cleared in 32 working hours, the load being stored or distributed between road and rail and water transport for local or long-distance delivery.
On the land side of the silo a road/rail point will accommodate nine lorry bays and three rail loading bays, and overhead mobile scales will permit simultaneous loading of three lorries; up to 1,200 tons will be handled in a single shift.
The PLA says the terminal will be favourably placed in relation to projected major roads and the by-passing of London's congestion will speedup round trips. The Authority owns surrounding land suitable for mills and associated developments.
