remove the stops altogether to increase manoeuvrability for street deliveries, and it is quite common to see bright marks on push rods or chassis where tyres are now permitted to rub.
Recently a small tractive unit was in for repairs for superficial damage and the steering section received no more than hub check and toe-in attention. After a few days back at work, the driver reported the vehicle satisfactory, other than that his steering wheel was in a new position when running straight ahead. This was disturbing and a search was made for the reason—possibly sheared key, and so on. It was only when the steering-box was removed that it was discovered that the steering-box spindle was twisted to the extent of one spline, between the steering arm inner face and the spline run-out. Crack detection showed a 79 per cent separation, and hitting something less than a builder's brick would have disconnected the steering.
