Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Council last Friday issued R.H. (53), which proposes to increase the wages of adult road haulage workers by 10s. a week and to make proportionate advances for juniors. It also raises the extra pasment for night work from 6d. to 8d. an hour. Objections to the proposals have to be lodged by next Friday.

It is understood that these will be considered by the Wages Council on March 28.

R.H. (53), when approved by the Minister of Labour, will give statutorâ–  effect to the new wage rates that were introduced voluntarily on February 21. The Minister is unlikely to date the award back to February 21, but ans employer who does not observe the increases recommended by the National Joint Industrial Council as from that date, could be forced to do so on a reference to the Industrial Disputes Tribunal.

B.M.M.O. WIN FARE CASE

AN application designed to increase revenue by £370,000 has been granted to the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., by the West Midland Licensing Authority.

Announcing his decision on Monday. the Authority, Mr. W. P. lames, said the company had produced evidence showing that last year, 871 services with an annual mileage of more than 28m. were operating at a loss.

"These services are unlikely to become remunerative in the future." hc said, " but we think it is necessary for social and other reasons that this network Of services should be continued."

During the hearing, the comparo undertook to reduce fares if a cut in the fuel tax was made in the Budget (The Commercial Motor last week). [Other news of fares appears On pages 184 and 186.] A.A. TO RE-ENACT FIRST ROAD TROOP MOVEMENT TOMORROW. as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Automobile Association, which was founded in the same year as The Commercial Motor, 50 veteran cars will carry a detachment of the Guards to Hastings, re-enacting an event of 1909 when the possibilities of moving troops by motor vehicles were first demonstrated.

A London General B-type bus, as illustrated on page 221, will follow the cars, together with a procession of modern military vehicles.

The vehicles will leave Kidbrooke R.A.F. station at 7 a.m. and arrive in Hastings at 11.50 a.m.

COVENTRY TO PROMOTE BILL

ON Monday, Coventry City Council decided to proceed with the promulgation of a Bill to legalize the existing system of concessionary traycl on the corporation buses. A town's meeting is to be held on March 31.
