Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Tires far a Golf Club's Station Omnibus.

[2589] (Direetor).—We think that you would probably find the K.T. tire, as supplied by the Commercial Tyre Co., Ltd., of 22, Albert Embankment, SE., quite good for your purpose, if the Rubberine people cannot give early delivery.

Detention Charges: He Gets 1s. 6d. Per Hour for a One-tonner, and 2s. Per Hour for a Two-tonr. er.

[2590] (Port)—The rates which you are getting for detention are probably as high as the work will stand in competition. Of course, it might pay you to quote a rate per hour all round, in which event you might ho able to cover yourself to slightly better advantage.

Rates for His 311-cwt. Van.

[2591] (Walaall).—You should get anything between 9d. per mile and 11.d. per mile, reckoning both light and loaded mileage together, for the hire of a 30-cwt. van, with a minimum of 5s. per hour if by the hour, in which latter event you should not run more than seven miles in any one hour if you wish to have a satisfactory working margin. If the work admits of more than that distance, charge by the mile.

Driving Chains.

[2592] (Trent).—In reply to your query as to the Lest treatment for driving chains of a 10 h.p. van, our suggestion is as follows :— That you purchasea spare pair of chains, take off the present ones, replacing them, of course, by the new pair, steep them in paraffin, thoroughly clean them, and wipe off all traces of paraffin. Then soak them in the chain lubricant, which you say you have, preferably heating the mixture with the chains, so as to ensure that the lubricant penetrates to all the bearings. You may then wipe off all the superfluous grease, and put the chains on one side for, say, a fortnight or a month, as is more convenient, then take off the chains which are in use, and replace them by the greased ones. If you proceed in a similar manner alternately with each pair of chains, you will, we think, get considerably better service.

Concerning an 18-24 h.p.

Chain-drive Panhard of 12437

[2593] (Jobmaster).—A car of the type which you mention does not strictly fall in the commercial category. Furthermore, in the absence of an inspection of the car, we cannot give an opinion as to its condition. The Panhard construction is generally sound, and able to stand up to hard work. You will, of course, have to start with a set of new tires, if those now on have been used nearly to the end of their lives, or have deteriorated through age. You ought to be able to get 9d. a mile for .the hire of such a car, on both the outward and-return journeys, and it ought to -pay you well at that figure. The • running cost should not exceed 5d. per mile, exclusive of garage and driver's wages, but inclusive of fuel, maintenance, insurance, tires and depreciation. If you let it by thehour, of course, you should have a minimum charge of something like 7s. 0.d., for .a maximum of nine miles run, if you are to have a satisfactory margin, except for theatre work, where youare in competition with other London johmasters who usually Only ask one guinea from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., -with a maximum of 20 miles of running.

[2594] (Sweet Manufacturers).—Most makers of one-ton vans will give any bona-fide intending customer a trial for at least a day, and will sometimes hire a machine for test work for a week.

Wolseley Motors, Ltd. (" Baker" vehicles), Adcleriey Park, Birmingham.

Steel Rims Tar Solid Tires.

[2595] (Westminster).—In reply to your letter re steel rims for solid tires, the several firms of whom we know who are makers of these are too fully occupied at present to be able to deal with any further orders. We suggest that you insert a small advertisement in our columns, asking for assistance. With regard to the Whitworth Standard mild steel bolts and nuts you might try :— Carr and Nichols, Manchester.

-Armstrong, Stevens and Son, Ltd., WhittaIl Street, Birmingham.
