• Transport Secretary John MacGregor has overturned the unintentional ban on LGV learners using motorways which was revealed by Commercial Motor earlier this year (CM 26 March-1 April).
The anomaly was caused by a drafting oversight when the Government changed the various categories of driving licences in 1991.
Many driving schools had mistakenly continued to give LGV trainees motorway experience and were furious that they had not been told of the change.
The Department of Transport and some police forces said at the time that they were unaware of the accidental ban.
