• Charterail is holding talks with two major UK supermarkets which it hopes to add to its contracts with 12 retailers and manufacturers already using its road/rail operation.
If the two supermarkets ac cept Charterail's bid they will join Safeway among the other companies sending freight on the services operating between Glasgow, Warrington and London.
Charterail managing director Robin Gisby is not prepared to name the supermarkets involved, but he is confident that the business can double its capacity every six months. 'Within five years we will be running 30 trains a night," says Gisby. The company currently operates five and a half trainloads.
