over new routes

/ The Freight Transport Association says the planned extension of London's red routes must not be allowed to create further problems for delivery drivers.

The FTA says delivery conditions worsened at some locations on the pilot red route in north and east London and it is meeting London's Traffic Director to press for more loading bays or, in some cases, the re-siting of existing bays.

Last week Minister of Transport for London Steven Norris announced a 480Iun extension to the network which should be completed by 1997.

"The red route has been a very considerable and heartening success," said Norris, who slammed his political opponents for saying the red route would do dreadful damage to local businesses.

"The red routes help everybody and improve the quality of life; there are fewer accidents, despite higher average speeds," said Norris. The minister claimed that the new network would provide "ample opportunities" for unloading.
