Soviet art has mirrored life, or a Marxist-Leninist vision of life, for over half a century — and vice versa, writes Edward Steen.
In the late 1970s a spate of lorry accidents was even attributed to drivers imitating a "socialist realist" poster. A muscular fellow gazed into the future through his window . . . this set off an unfortunate craze.
