A TRAINING levy of 0.8 per cent — the same as last year — is being proposed by the Road Transport Industry Training Board for 1983/84.
The proposals were agreed late last month, without the employer/union-education arguments that occurred last year when the levy was reduced from one per cent. They have still to be approved by Employment Secretary Norman Tebbit.
RTITB running costs are to be met out of 0.2 per cent of the levy, while the remaining 0.6 per cent covers specific training grants for managers, graduates, company training officers, hgv drivers, young drivers, furniture removals operatives, sales staff, craftsmen and technicians, students, apprentices and junior trainees.
Road Haulage Association secretary Len Harper told CM that the employers are prepared to accept the 0.8 per cent levy for the time being, so that the RTITB can pay off some of its outstanding debts, while maintaining the present grant payments.
Even if the grants or levy were reduced, the RTITB would still incur high costs as it paid off the debts.
Mr Harper added that the RHA wants the Board to continue to reduce its overhead costs and to sell the High Ercall Mateo.
