This new situation could come about quite soon. The final test in a series of field trials took place on the Staines by-pass on Friday.

Powers to use the equipment already exist (Section 14 of the Road Traffic Act 1974 which came into operation under RTA 1974 (Commencement No I) Order 1974, SI 2075 (C34).

The DoE is to demonstrate the equipment to the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association shortly—and CM understands that results will demostrate that the tolerance is well within 50kg (about Icwt).

After the equipment was demonstrated at last year's RHA tipper conference CM pointed out that weighing vehicles in forward and reverse gears over the equipment produced unacceptable variations (CM July 11, 1975). More stringent trials have since been carried out, At Staines every conceivable wheel configuration has been tested too, first with deadweights and then, after load ing, weighed statically.

The Surrey Trading Standards inspectors, conducting the tests in collaboration both with the DoE, set out to discredit the equipment if possible. More tests at Barham, Kent, involved check weighings on a static weighbridge. Since the equipment is portable, it means that for DoE and Trading Standards enforcement staff, it can be up and away to busier spots if traffic is light at one roadside check. It won't be too long before there's a considerable clampdown on the overweight.
