Keywords : Chapelhall, Geest, Mcaleer

• Peter McAleer and Son, of Chapelhall, applied at Glasgow last week for a variation of its 0 licence to add two new vehicles to an existing fleet of 12 and two trailers. Mr John McAleer said that the firm was engaged almost entirely on carrying bananas for Geest Industries Ltd at Airdrie and used Geest's facilities.

Mr George McCallum, vehicle examiner, said that he had inspected 16 units of the company's fleet over nine months and had placed eight delayed prohibitions. Facilities were virtually non-existent at Chapelhall, records were not adequate and defects had resulted from insufficient maintenance. He could not support a grant for additional vehicles because the firm must first of all put its premises into order.

Mr H. Aylmer, deputy Scottish LA, said that he would refuse the application for two extra vehicles in view of the inspector's report. At the same time he would not take action under Section 69 despite the incidence of GV9s. He instructed that a further examination of the fleet be made at a reasonable date ahead.
