R1NCE the increase in the rate of bJ excise licences it has become even more important to study savings in unladen weight. Utilizing high-tensile steel frames in this low-loader R. A. Dyson and Co. Ltd. saved about 2 tons unladen weight compared with conventional construction, representing a saving in tax of £72 a .year.
The outfit was recently supplied to Border Plant Hire Ltd., and is of 30 tons capacity with a deck 20 ft. by 8 ft.. the
centre section of which is laid with 2.5 in. hardwood whilst the outer sections are laid with ik in. steel chequer-plate. Tyres are 14-00-20. • 22-ply carried on twinoscillating axles which are provided with 15-5 in. by 6 in. brakes operated by a twoline air pressure system. Hinged extensions permit the width of the semi-trailer to be increased by 12 in, and a 6-5-ton hand which is mounted on the swan-neck. The tractive unit is a Foden with tilt cab and FD6 Mk. VI 175 b.h.p. engine.
