WHEN representatives of the TRTA went Y to the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday to discuss the proposals for limiting the use of radio-telephones in vehicles no progress was made, the Ministry and Home Office representatives not being receptive to Association requests that microphone use be allowed in moving vehicles.
Opposition to the Ministry's proposals had been voiced at last week's meeting of the vehicles committee, at which Mr. H. B. Phillips was re-elected chairman and new members were welcomed. They are Mr. Reid, of the Western division Mr. Edmonds, of the West Midland division and Mr. Webster from Yorkshire (West Riding). The committee welcomed the plans for vehicle testing and appointed Mr. G. Turvey, assistant secretary, to represent the TRTA OR the working parties set up to consider revisions of C and U regulations: technical advisers will be co-opted from time to time.
On braking, the committee decided to urge strongly that during the early years of vehicle testing a standard lower than 50 per cent for service brakes and 25 per cent for handbrakes should be adopted to cater for existing vehicles.
