Type 600 cab marked a notable improvement in the appearance of the vehicles and in the cab appointments. It also created a demand from various users of earlier models for modernized cabs.
To meet this call. Messrs. Bailey and Thornton, 102 Dudley Road East, Oldbury, near Birmingham, have fitted a number of redesigned cabs to Hippo, Octopus and Beaver chassis. These can be supplied for £235, which does not include the cost of the electrical fittings or radiator conversion.
As the accompanying illustration shows, the cab gives the older vehicles a completely modern appearance, as well as providing more comfortable accommodation. The later types of standard radiator and grid are employed. They are placed several inches lower than the original location to correspond with the design of the Type 600 cab. Other features similar to the current model include the headlights, Leyland flashes on the front panels and standard Leyland seats. The cab is 6 in. wider than the earlier design. making it much more capacious.
Full-depth divided windscreens with sloping lower sides and curved outer corners give improved visibility to the front and a glass window in the left side panel can be used to observe low obstructions when manceuvring. The windscreen on the driver's side opens on quadrants.
Composite construction of wood framing, with steel or light-alloy panels. is employed. The scuttle is of polished timber, and a large locker is fitted on the left side of the engine cover. The bumper is of the standard Leyland type or of steel channel section, according to the model.
