riA PROPOSAL to seek an alteration in the purchase tax regulations concerning vans will be put forward by the Leeds branch at the annual conference of the National Employers' Association of Vehicle Builders, at Eastbourne from June 21-23,
The branch suggests that the exemption from purchase tax of van bodies should not be withdrawn if they have side windows immediately to the rear of the driver's seat, as the windows assist road safety by providing better ' visibility for the driver when he is reversing, The London branch will propose that representations be made for the amelioration of taxation on road transport—purchase tax, fuel tax and the levy on commercial vehicles of over 30 cwt., and for the allocation of a much higher proportion of road transport taxation to the improvement of roads.
P.O. VANS SUBJECT TO 30 M.P.H. A LADDER on the top of a Post ra Office engineer's van constituted " goods " and the vehicle was thus limited to 30 m.p.h., Kendal magistrates decided last week. James David Stirling, The Crescent, Grange, was fined £2 for exceeding 30 m.p.h. near Levens Bridge on March 21.
Prosecuting, Supt. T. Barbour said that there were tools inside the van. He would rely on the Appeal Court's decision that a window cleaner's vehicle, with a ladder on the roof and carrying buckets inside, was carrying goods within the meaning of the statute.
Mr. E. G. Wilson, defending, submitted that the ladder was part of the vehicle and a piece of equipment.
