The Latest Model Millars' Tractor Scores by Reason of Its Narrow Track and the Single-castor Steering.

TRACTORS capable of manoeuvring with their trailers in confined yards and narrow roadways are becoming more and more important in urban-transport problems and the Machine constituting the latest delivery by Millers' Machinery Co., Ltd., of Pinner's Hall, Great Winchester Street, London, E.C.2, is of interest because it is able to deal with 5-ton or 6-ton loads, has excellent road-adhesion properties, and is extremely mobile. The Millers' Tructractor has been well known in this country for some years and the alterations which have been effected in its design to convert it into a tractor-lorry, although simple in themselves, make the resulting vehicle an effective contribution to the tractor-lorry field.

The new machine has a built up girder type frame, approximately triangular in shape and at the front is mounted, by means of combined coil-spring and pneumatic suspension, a small, solid-rubber-tyred castor wheel. The usefulness of this form of steering, together with the narrowness of the track, which is only 3 ft. 5i ins., combine in rendering the machine very easy to handle in limited space.

The power ,unit, is a 16 b.h.p. fouri-eylindered petrol engine of 31-in, bore and 41-in. stroke, to which are fitted a dynamo and starter ; a Solex carburetter and B.T.H. magneto are also ordinarily employed. The transmission is through a gearbox providing three speeds forward and one reverse and a heavy internal-gear-driven back axle, incorporating a differential of the bevel type. The gear ratios are : First, 3.88 to 1; second, 1.7 to 1; third, 1 to 1; the total reduction on the direct gear being 10.5 to 1.

Semi-elliptic, underslung springs, used for the back axle, take the drive and torque. The rear wheels have 28-in. by 7-in, solid rubber tyres and the front wheel has a 22-in. by 5-in. tyre.

The outfit recently supplied to Greene% Whitley and Co., Ltd., the well-known Warrington brewer, included a twowheeled trailer with the swan-neck type of frame and an extra wheel mounted at the forward end, which can be raised by a turn-screw arrangement when the tractor and trailer are coupled. The drawbar has a patent spring-and, ball type of attachment. The load for which the combination was constructed is one of 215 cases of bottled beer, the weight being approximately 6 tons 2 cwt. With this burden it is regularly covering some 35 miles to 45 miles daily on local town work, which, of course, involves continual stopping and starting, and it is performing its task admirably. The tractor alone has a turning radius of 8 ft. 9 ins., and its overall length is only 9 ft., so that it is able to get in and out of very narrow yards.

It may be mentioned that another Millers' tractor, which is used for conveying 6-ton loads of barley at a Watford ,brewery, is often called upon to shift railway wagons in a siding yard and is capable of moving two loaded 10-ton wagons without difficulty. On ordinary town work its consumption averages about a gallon of petrol per eight miles.
