announced it was to open an outlet at a service station just off the M40 in Buckinghamshire with a licence to serve alcohol between 8am and lam.
At the time, a spokesman for the firm said he hoped drivers would act responsibly and stressed the wide selection of nonalcoholic drinks, coffee and food available in its pubs as an alternative to a lunchtime pint.
The group, which hopes to open a chain of motorway outlets, stressed that it had met local police and government representatives before applying for its licence and had received no objections to its plans.
The move, however, highlighted the issue of drink-driving and was slammed as a backward step by road safety campaigners. It also came at a time when Westminster and the Scottish Government were starting to step up efforts to reduce incidences of drink-driving on British roads.
