• A Sunderland-based haulier which owes more than £350,000 has gone into liquidation with the loss of around 20 drivers jobs. Lawson Freight Services (LFS), which ran 20 vehicles on international work from its Woodbine Street, Hendon operating centre, went into liquidation with debts of £450,000 and assets of „4:116,000.

Lawson's collapse has left more than 100 creditors owed £265,792 after the company paid .£83,000 to preferential creditors including Customs and Excise, Inland Revenue, the Department of Transport and employees.

LFS was set up in March 1987 by sole directors David and Amelia Lawson. It owes money to a number of hauliers in the North-East; the largest creditor is P&O European Ferries (Portsmouth) which is owed £70,000. The company's fleet of Mercedes-Benz tractors, rigids and vans was sold at auction this week.

David Lawson was unavailable for comment as CM went to press; he is believed to be on holiday.

o LFS is not connected with Lawson Freight Ltd of Somerset.
