by Karen Miles • Lorry drivers who fail to pay court fines could lose their driving licences if Government thinking on the issue becomes law. Gary Streeter, parliamentary secretary at the Lord Chancellor's department, says he is keen to study the removal of licences, as well as electronic tagging, for people who persistently refuse to pay their fines.
If the idea becomes law it could hit the road haulage industry particularly badly—there are more than a million LGV licence holders—but the Road Haulage Association fears some drivers would continue to drive without their licences.
Streeter was speaking at the publication of the first phase of guidance on the enforcement of financial penalties.
The government wants to reduce the level of fines written off though lack of payment while keeping prisons clear for more serious criminals.
