THE GREAT social significance of the Scottish Postbus network comes out strongly in a paper by Mr C. W. Trodden, Scottish Postal Board. In giving some recent details of progress he revealed that the entire transport system of the island of Islay was undertaken by Postbuses, and on one of the island's services the 20,000th passenger had been carried.

Altogether, there were now 54 Postbus services in Scotland operating over 1,000 miles of roads. In 1974 the Postbus fleet covered 667,426 stage miles and around 700 passengers per week were carried. Annual average revenue per service was approximately £500.

Although costs were closely monitored the type of rural service given—mostly by 11passenger Commer vehicles but helped by four-seat LandRover Postbuses and Marina Estate cars—was extremely high and Government encouragement was called for.

Mr Trodden paid tribute to the support of users, and holiday makers, and particularly to the postmen who were obliged to pass stringent public service vehicle examinations and operate according to the standards of public service vehicles.
