• Improvements made to turbochargers to be fitted on Cummins diesels built at the company's Shotts, Lanarkshire, factory include larger-section turbine blades to reduce turbocharger speed and back pressure and so improve scavenging and heat dissipation. An encapsulated heat shield gives better protection from heat in the exhaust section of the turbocharger, while fitting a five-rib bearing housing provides better heat transfer to lubricating oil, so reducing expansion and contraction of the bearing cage.
Sealing is also improved and the main result of the changes is reduced air and exhaust temperatures so giving extended piston, ring and valve life: intake manifold temperature is lowered by approximately 8 per cent. Fuel consumption is claimed to be improved by 2 to 2.5 per cent as compared with the consumption of engines using the existing turbocharger and longer engine life is anticipated by the manufacturers.
