• The fate of the Government's road safety research body should be decided this week when the Transport Secretary announces the new owner of the Transport Research Laboratory.
Sir George Young will name either a management buy-out or a consortium of the AA, RAC and two civil engineering consultants as the winner.
But the move to privatise the TRL has been attacked by the former Conservative transport minister Peter Bottomley who says that selling the 400employee organisation will threaten its impartiality.
