• Environmental groups from seven European countries have joined forces to campaign for "a sustainable European Transport policy". The European Federation for Transport and the Environment (T&E) is calling for high, harmonised European fuel taxes, lower speed limits and tougher emission regulations.
President-elect Arie Bleijenberg of the Netherlands says the group will also campaign for tax incentives to promote cleaner vehicles, and for a shift in EC transport spending from road construction to incentives for walking, cycling and public transport.
Transport 2000, the UK environmental group, has joined T&E and expects other British groups to follow suit.
E EC Environment Minister Carlo Ripa di Meana plans to produce proposals for an extra tax on fossil fuels before the end of the year.
