Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Road freight is set to continue its domination of European freight markets into the next century, according to a new report on freight movements throughout the community by the EC.

The Europa report predicts that road freight movements will increase to around 500 million tonne/kilometres this year. Between 1984 and 1988 road freight movements rose by an average of 6.5% a year, and the EC predicts that this will continue throughout the 90s.

Throughout Europe, road freight now accounts for over 80% of domestic freight movements and 56.6 of international freight movements measured in tonne/kilometres.

The EC estimates that further environmental measures could restrict growth of road freight by around 5%, while boosting rail freight by over 20%.

British hauliers now handle over 5.5% of intra-European road freight, compared with 18.26% for Dutch hauliers, 16.5% for Germans, and 163% for the French.
