• The Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association have both slammed parts of the EC driving test proposals as "impractical and undesirable".
They also oppose the Department of Transport's scheme which insists that truck drivers must hold a rigid vehicle licence and have six months' driving experience before applying for their HGV Class One.
The FTA says: "This will cause severe costs for the industry, and employers who only have artic fleets will be forced to stop in-house training. That is undesirable."
Both associations reject requirements for drivers to be able to correct steering and exhaust faults, and to have knowledge of the driving characteristics of different types of vehicles.
